FreeRice for them, better English for you
May 1, 2008
What does a word like ‘perspicuity’ and ending world hunger have to do with each other? Poverty.com’s sister site, FreeRice, gives us an answer. Anyone with internet access can play the free vocabulary game (which, by the way, has all kinds of levels and options) and accumulate rice for donation. How? According to the FAQ section, FreeRice uses money from advertisers on the site to purchase the staple for worldwide distribution through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). They go on to mention that according to the United Nations, nearly 25,000 die each day from hunger. That’s astounding, can you even imagine that? I can’t.
In any case, there are definitely a variety of worldwide measures being taken to address this tremendous problem and FreeRice is one creative way that people can contribute. However, there are certainly many other ways to give out there and I would add that getting educated and increasing awareness is one of those important first steps. I’m in this process too, for sure.
Thanks to Chris for the link. By the way, I learned, by playing the vocab game, that ‘perspicuity’ means clarity.

Nice, I think I managed just around that amount the first time I played. It’s actually kind of fun and a good vocabulary brushup, at least for me. Thanks for the comment.
